Allen Americans vs. Idaho Steelheads
Date(s) - Fri Jan 05, 2018
6:15 pm - 10:00 pm
The Steelheads take the ice for the first time in 2018 tonight at CenturyLink Arena against a divisional rival, squaring off with the Allen Americans for the sixth time this season and the first game of a two-game set. The Steelheads are looking to snap a three-game winless skid on Friday, the team going 0-2-1 over their final three games of a five-game road trip to close December. The Americans also hope to get back in the win column following back-to-back losses to the Wichita Thunder.
Idaho had a 4-1 lead last Saturday heading into the third period at Maverik Center, but could not hold off a Grizzlies comeback in a 5-4 shootout loss. The Grizzlies scored three unanswered goals in a span of 5:59, with Charley Graaskamp netting his second goal of the night to tie the game. Despite Justin Parizek’s fourth shootout goal of the season, Utah would hand the Steelheads just their second shootout loss of the season. Cole Ully posted three points on the night for Idaho, and Will Merchant scored a power play goal in his 100th pro game.
Cole Ully’s three-point night was his first as a Steelhead, giving him two goals and five points in four games since joining the Steelheads from AHL Texas. His line with Jefferson Dahl and Henrik Samuelsson has been among Idaho’s most productive in recent games. Dahl is in the midst of the best goal-scoring stretch of his career with seven goals and eleven points in the last eight games, including the game’s first goal in each of the last two contests. Samuelsson has points in seven of his last eight games, totaling four goals and nine assists.
The Steelheads are 2-3-0 against Allen this season but did earn a victory when they last faced each other on November 25th. The teams combined for 148 penalty minutes, 95 of them assessed to Allen, as well as four 10-minute misconducts and three ejections in the third period. Idaho took advantage with four power play goals in the game to match a season-high. A similar melee will cost the Americans for today’s contest before the puck drops, with Allen defensemen David Makowski, Mike Gunn, and Dalton Thrower all suspended for an altercation last Saturday against Wichita that will keep them out of the lineup for the weekend.
Eyes on Archambault…
Olivier Archambault will make his first appearance in this season-series for Allen, having missed the first five meetings while playing in AHL San Jose. Archambault has racked up 21 points in ten ECHL games this season, including five goals and 14 points during his current seven-game points streak. The 2011 Montreal Canadiens draft pick has totaled 65 goals and 135 points in 133 career ECHL games.

Six Steelheads score in win over Allen
Play of the gameWill Merchant’s third period goal was a dagger for the Americans and a perfect transition through the neutral zone for Idaho. Charlie Dodero took the puck at his own blue line and snapped a hard pass up the middle of the ice, past the reach of Allen defenseman Eric Roy and onto the tape of Steve McParland. He and Merchant cruised in on goal before McParland placed a perfect pass on Merchant’s stick for a redirect under the bar, giving Merchant goals in back-to-back games.
Boise, ID (1/5/18)— Jefferson Dahl and Will Merchant both posted three-point nights and six different players found the back of the net as the Idaho Steelheads (19-10-5) opened 2018 with a 6-3 victory over the Allen Americans (18-10-5) in front of a sold-out crowd of 5,010 fans at CenturyLink Arena on Friday night. The win moved Idaho past the Americans in the standings and into third place in the Mountain Division.
The win was the 100th regular season victory for Steelheads Head Coach Neil Graham.
Tied 3-3 entering the third period, the Steelheads scored three unanswered goals to earn their third win in six meetings with Allen this year. Steve McParland put Idaho back in front quickly at 2:19 of the third, driving down the right wing and forcing the puck to the front of the net before it deflected off of defenseman Anthony Calabrese and behind goaltender Jeremy Brodeur for McParland’s team-leading 15th goal of the season. McParland has goals in three straight contests.
At 9:46 of the third, Will Merchant expanded the lead with his eighth of the season after finishing a 2-on-1 feed from McParland. Charlie Dodero sprung the Steelheads on the rush with a blue line-to-blue line feed, Merchant chipping the McParland pass up under the cross-bar to make it 5-3.
The Steelheads finished the scoring at 14:10 on a power play deflection by Jefferson Dahl for his 13th goal of the year. Dahl has eight goals and 14 points in his last nine games.
Idaho opened the scoring at 6:46 of the first period on a Henrik Samuelsson deflection of a Zach Bell shot, Samuelsson’s 13th goal. After Eric Roy’s power play marker tied the game 1:16 later, his eighth goal, the Steelheads would take the lead into intermission on a long-range marker from Dodero.
With 1:38 left in the first, Dodero blasted a shot from the neutral zone that beat Brodeur to the blocker, Dodero’s second goal of the season for a 2-1 lead. Idaho had the game’s first eleven shots on goal.
Justin Parizek extended the Steelheads’ lead to 3-1 at 2:13 of the second, scoring his 13th goal of the year and Idaho’s fifth shorthanded goal of the season. Parizek stripped the puck from Joel Chouinard on the forecheck and fed Dahl in the slot. Brodeur made the initial save but Parizek cleaned up the rebound.
The Americans would respond twice to tie the game, with Alex Schoenborn scoring his fifth of the season at 9:50 of the second period and Bryan Moore netting his 12th of the year at 15:30. Gary Steffes, playing his first game of the season after coming out of retirement to join a shorthanded Allen roster, earned assists on both goals.
Philippe Desrosiers stopped 21 of 24 shots to earn his 14th win of the season, including a shorthanded breakaway save on Moore in the second period.
The Steelheads played before their sixth sellout crowd in 19 home games this season. The Steelheads have won four of their last five games at CenturyLink Arena.
The Steelheads and Americans square off again on Saturday night at CenturyLink Arena. Puck-drop is scheduled for 7:10pm MT with the game available on 1350AM KTIK and seen on Cable One and ECHLTV.
