Boise, ID (10/26/12) – Goaltender Tyler Beskorowany came up with 40 saves and the offense chipped in with three third-period goals Saturday night as the Idaho Steelheads knocked off the Ontario Reign, 6-2, in front of 3,343 fans at CenturyLink Arena in Boise.
The win was Idaho's fifth in a row as the team moved to 5-2 on the young season.
Idaho jumped out to a two-goal lead in the first period on an even-strength goal from Austin Fyten off the back of Ontario goaltender Chris Carrozzi's leg at 3:48 of the first. Then, at 14:24, Austin Smith stuffed home a wrap-around, short-handed goal to give Idaho a 2-0 lead. Ontario would cut into Idaho's lead just over one minute later when Derek Couture's centering pass bounced off of a back-checking Kael Mouillierat and into the Idaho net to make it a 2-1 game after one period.
In the second, Beskorowany stole the show, making several big saves as Ontario pressured the Idaho net relentlessly. The Reign out-shot Idaho 17-6 in the period, eventually getting the equalizer from CJ Stretch, but Beskorowany made a number of huge saves, including stuffing Dan DaSilva on a breakaway attempt midway through the frame. Late in the second, momentum swung back to Idaho when Mathieu Tousignant fed a puck from below the goal line into the slot and Andrew Carroll was there to smack it home at 18:48 of the second, his fifth, to put Idaho back on top for good at 3-2.
The Steelheads were able to pour it on in the third period. First, it was Smith re-directing a Tousignant pass brilliantly from the bottom of the left-hand circle between Carrozzi's arm and the near post, his second of the night at the 2:34 mark of the period to put Idaho up, 4-2. That score would hold for most of the period until Ontario coach Jason Christie pulled Carrozzi from the net with over 4:30 left to play in favor of an extra attacker. The Reign kept the puck in the zone for the better part of two minutes before defenseman Chris Huxley lost his balance, allowing Idaho to get the puck to a streaking Justin Dowling for the game-clinching, empty-net goal at 17:31 of the third. Dowling's fourth of the season extended his point streak to five games.
Idaho would add another insurance goal when Patrick Cullity's wrister from the top of the right circle beat Carrozzi over the shoulder. Cullity's second in as many games capped a big night for the defenseman, who was plus-4 on the night.
Beskorowany got the win with 40 saves on 42 shots. Carrozzi gets the loss after stopping 20 of 25. Neither team converted on the power play despite ample opportunities - Ontario was 0-7, Idaho was 0-4.
Idaho travels to the Maverik Center in West Valley City, Utah, for a Saturday-night matchup. The Steelheads return home on Friday, November 2, to host the same Grizzlies at Boise's CenturyLink Arena.
