(Boise, ID) - Kyle Kraemer netted two goals and former Steelheads Mike Gabinet and Tristan King each picked up two assists as the Ontario Reign defeated the Idaho Steelheads, 4-0, Friday night in Boise.
J.F. Berube stopped 26 shots in the shutout victory for Ontario (38-18-8). The loss ended a five-game unbeaten streak for Idaho (27-30-8).
The Reign scored twice in the first period. First, it was Jason Beeman from on top of the crease with his first ECHL goal of the season at 10:14 of the first to make it 1-0. Then, at 17:48, Kyle Kraemer notching his 23rd of the season off an Idaho defensive zone turnover. Ontario extended the lead by two more goals in the second period. Kraemer's second of the night, 24th of the season, finished off a nice tic-tac-toe passing sequence from King to Gabinet and Gabinet to Kraemer at the top of the crease. Kraemer tapped it past a helpless Jerry Kuhn to make it 3-0 four minutes into the second period. Bill Bagron redirected a Vincent LoVerde shot from the blue line on the power play at 12:42 of the second to make it 4-0 and round out the scoring.
Idaho had chances throughout the game - Aaron Lewicki and Derek LeBlanc each hit the post with a shot and Ian Lowe's breakaway shot beat J.F. Berube in the first period but whistled just wide of the far post.
Kuhn made 36 saves in net for Idaho and now has 1,842 saves on the season, which moves him into third place on the all-time ECHL single-season saves list with seven games left in the regular season. Ryan Munce, with 1,852 saves for Mississippi in 2008-09, is second on the all-time list.
Ontario went 1-3 on the power play, while Idaho went 0-4.
NOTE: The game marked the professional debut of forwards Fred Cassiani (Lake Superior State) and Mike Hellyer (U of Manitoba) for the Steelheads. Both signed just prior to the game.
